Many of you already know that Truetimber’s own Peter Girardi is a grandfather twice over. If you didn’t know, he will proudly tell you all about it!
It was a pleasure to have the homeschool group closest to his heart visit us at Camp Truetimber last week and learn how to inoculate logs with mushroom spores. Peter taught these rising Urban Forest Dwellers how to drill small holes in green logs, drop in the spores, seal the holes with wax, and then wait. And wait. And wait some more. “Are they ready yet?” “How long do we have to wait?”
When is the last time you started a meal eight months to a year before it would be ready? The good news for the kids, who all took home their inoculated logs to continue the wait, was that Peter had brought ready-to-serve Shitake and Lions’ Mane mushrooms with him to at least show them what they would be waiting for.
We cannot think of a better lesson in patience for children who live in a world that otherwise teaches them anything in life is a button click away. Maybe some things in life can be had with a click, but Peter’s grandsons and their young friends will learn that sometimes the best and freshest things can be grown with our own hands if we can only stand the wait.
